This Sapphire:

This bright 1.97ct Pear shaped Yellow Sapphire is 10.2mm high x 6.8mm wide x 3.2mm deep.
It has a pretty lemon colour. I purchased it on the 31st August 2018.

Sapphire is a variety of the mineral corundum. It is the second hardest substance on earth after diamond, rating 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Corundum itself is not a very rare mineral, but gem quality corundum is extremely rare.

Most natural sapphire is quite pale and light in colour. Only a small percentage of natural sapphire exhibits vivid and intense colours without some type of treatment or enhancement, the most common being heat-treatment. This sapphire has been heated to bring out the lemon colour.

For many years, only blue sapphires were recognised as 'true' sapphire. Today, all colours of gem quality corundum are known as sapphire, with exception to red corundum, which is classified as ruby.

Caring for Sapphires

Sapphires are typically very durable. For cleaning, it is best to use warm soapy water and a soft cloth. As with most gemstones, avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steamers, as vibrations and heat can damage stones.

Always remove gemstone jewellery or gemstones before exercising, cleaning or engaging in harsh physical activities. Do not expose sapphires to acid and store them away from other gemstones to avoid scratches.
